Each semester, I give my creative writing students an assignment that requires they find a "natural world space" and translate the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures into words. Many of them, sadly, cannot even think of how to find a "natural space." They often don't even know where to find the nearest "domestic nature." After they write down these sensory details, they are to write a poem based on the language of the landscape. I give them the poem "Tracks" by Tomas Transtromer as an example:

Weary of all who come with words, words but no language
I make my way to the snow-covered island.
The untamed has no words.
The unwritten pages spread out on every side!
I come upon the tracks of deer in the snow.
Language but no words.Terry Ann Thaxtonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14933749949423313226noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8794312182471569364.post-81897801919132922742012-08-31T20:11:54.152-07:002012-08-31T20:11:54.152-07:00Children have an unspoken connection with nature. ...Children have an unspoken connection with nature. I grew up with parents that allowed nature to be my playground and teacher, I just returned from a camping trip with my grandson, We spend everyday exploring what wisdom and wonder nature has for us. The creativity that nature evokes to a child, with their ever evolving immaginations can not be matched. My parents gave me the gift of a deep relationship with nature, I have given to my son and he and I give it to his son, and I hope it lives on for neverending generations.
I am humbled and inspired by the elements surrounding me everyday.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
